Chapter Seven
Murdered. Matthew had been murdered. Roz closed her eyes and pulled the covers up around her shoulders. There was one thing in Jamie's favor, once she had asked him to tell her the truth. He hadn't lied. He had sat down on the edge of her bed, facing her chair, and quietly told her everything.
His mother and Matthew had been friends for years. Meryl had suspected murder, and once the coroner had confirmed it, she had asked her second son to infiltrate the household, use his skills as a private investigator, and figure out who could have killed Matthew. And why.
He had even told her she'd been the chief suspect for a very short time. "But not now," he'd added quickly.
"What made you change your mind?" She had been emotionally destroyed by his having lied to her, even if at first he had had to—and later he had wanted to protect her. Her darker thoughts she kept to the back of her consciousness, not wanting to face them yet.
"It didn't add up. A woman who takes animals and nurses them back to life wouldn't commit murder. I trust my instincts, and they were screaming at me that you couldn't have murdered Matthew."
She couldn't stop the next question from bubbling out, although she wasn't sure she wanted to hear the answer.
"Was the—was the dinner and the dancing and everything—I mean, were you still collecting information for—"
"No, Roz. That had nothing to do with any of this and everything to do with you and me."
"I feel like I don't know you. I feel like I've shown you all there is of me and there's still so much I don't know about you. When you had that gun in your hand, it was as if you were a different person."
"That's my work. Roz, what you've seen here in this mansion, that's me. That's the real Jamie."
"But do you understand how I'd be scared? How I'd feel I didn't know anything about you or who you really are?"
He'd sighed then and looked her straight in the eye. "I was going to tell you. I'd been thinking about it for a long time. I knew I could trust you, knew you had nothing to do with the murder. But there was so much that had changed in your life. In the beginning, I couldn't tell you. Later, I thought the case would be solved and I could tell you afterward."
"And now?"
"Now I'm moving into the adjoining bedroom. I'll be carrying a gun with me at all times. I don't want either you or Crumpet out of my sight. We have to face the obvious."
"And what's that?"
"They may come after you. You know too much. In order to dispose of Crumpet, they may try to get you, too."
Wrapped in a blanket and lying in bed, Roz felt more confined than ever. If the mansion had seemed like a prison before, now she was truly trapped.
"But what do we do?" she had asked him. "Wait for them to come after us again?"
"That's exactly what we have to do.
